Laughing
Buddha/Weeping Sufi
“Excess of sorrow laughs. Excess of joy weeps.”(William Blake ) Poems joining two modes of enlightenment, Buddhist and Sufi, that may in fact be one—from my sitting with saintly Shunryu Suzuki of the San Francisco Zen Center in the early 60s, and my blessed time with Qutb Shaykh ibn al- Habib of Fez in Meknes, Morocco, in the 1970s, may Allah be pleased with both of them. Written in 2003-2004, published by The Ecstatic Exchange, 2005. |

Mars & Beyond
If starry space no limit knows/And sun succeeds to sun,
There is no reason to suppose/ Our earth the only one.
'Mid countless constellations cast/A million worlds may be,
With each a God to bless or blast/And steer to destiny (Robert Service). Written during “Spirit’s” robotic Mars exploration, with all the imaginative speculation that might evoke. Written in 2004 and published by The Ecstatic Exchange, 2005. |
