The Stonecutter's Dream

ANGEL (Appearing as before):
     Right here, in the sky,
     Where planets fly,
     Comets fling
     And angels sing,
You’ve said what you’ve said and now it is.
A cloud you are, with all its fizz!

(Stagehand takes away sun headdress, places cloud prop in Stonecutter’s hands, takes headdress off of stage left. Cloud starts dancing, letting off streamers of water.)

CLOUD:
     Water sings! Water rushes!
A line of water-spray really gushes!
Look at my drops, how hard they fall!
Now I’m the most powerful thing of all!

(Stagehands bring out more blue cloth-strips, and make them rhythmically rise and fall, alternating to make the look of flooding river water.)

Stagehands Rippling Bands Of Cloth

CHORUS (while manipulating cloths):
Look at that cloud! The rivers flood.
Just as in our bodies the blood
Starts boiling in feverish waves and rushes!
This cloud is killing us with its gushes!

(Cloud laughs maniacally)

CLOUD:
Now I’m really the most powerful of all!
Nothing can withstand my great rainfall!
Cows are swept off their hooves, even houses and mosques!
People are lifted right out of their socks!

(While Cloud dances, rock is pushed onto stage left, slowly, soon occupying same position as it did at the beginning of the play.)

CLOUD:
Down water, hurl! Smash that rock to smithereens!
Make that big rock look like a handful of beans!
Make it quake and quail and shake with fear!
Dissolve it away until it’s no longer here!

(Cloud dances around rock, the water-banners flapping furiously, storm-music
crashing)

CLOUD (Growing more frustrated):
Smash rock! Dissolve! Melt, face of schist!
Turn your granite self to mist!
It will not budge, it will not melt!
This is the greatest block I’ve ever felt!
How can this rock be more powerful than me?
It’s just a dumb rock! How can it be?
This rock is even more powerful than cloud!
I WANT TO BE A ROCK! IT MUST BE ALLOWED!
     I MUST BE A ROCK!
