BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN
FELLOWSHIP PLAYS
Tayyad Sultan,
1994

"Before the closing
and opening of an eye
I will make a beggar into
a rich man--
Before the closing and
opening of an eye
I can make and unmake
this world.
Before the closing and
opening of an eye
I will make a king into
a slave and a slave into a king."

Mr. Richman and The Shaykh, 1995
MR.
RICHMAN:
I haven’t been
able to sleep properly or leave my house, for fear my money
will get stolen. I am
going to the window now to look out over the city
and imagine all the hoodlums
and petty thieves plotting to overrun this
hilltop and take all my
money, pull the gold knobs off the drawers, pull up the
marble slabs in my living
rooms, snatch my wife's ermines... I can't stand the
silence, because I can
hear the minds of the robbers plotting and scheming...
I can actually hear the
squeaking gears and rusted pulleys of their thoughts...

The
City of Sokku, 1996

NARRATOR:
Now here the scene changes
into a forest with vegetation,
so you'll have to squint
your eyes and use your full imagination,
giant boabab trees, lianas
hanging down into lagoons,
orchids with wiry tendrils
and flowers big as baboons,
gnashing of alligator
teeth, chattering of monkeys and the
high-pitched
songs of birds,
ibixes stalking along
the riverbanks, stinking waterbuffalo in herds…

Meeting
in Mecca, 1997

DEER:
Ibrahim ibn Adham, Why
are you hunting me?
Why are you trying to
kill me?
Why aren't you looking
out for yourself instead of going after me?
Why don't you wake up
to the one who is hunting you and trying to kill
you,
the Angel of Death, Izrael?
He is right behind you,
Ibrahim.
The Angel of Death is
hot on your trail,
with his bowstring pulled
way back, and his arrow poised to shoot!
Ah, King Ibrahim, sovereign
of the earth and skies,
you'd better try to escape
death,
you'd better be on the
lookout for the Angel Izrael!. |
